Your Travel Notes

Currency

Portugal uses the Euro (€). Notes range from €5 to €500, but it’s common to carry smaller denominations, especially outside the major cities.

Cuisine

Expect bold, honest flavours. Grilled fish, octopus rice, and the iconic bacalhau are local staples, often enhanced with olive oil, garlic, and a hint of lemon. Don’t leave without trying a warm pastel de nata dusted with cinnamon.

Transport

Renting a car offers the greatest freedom to explore the coastlines and inland treasures. In cities, however, public transport is affordable, reliable, and well-connected.

Tipping etiquette

Tipping isn’t obligatory, but it’s appreciated. Leave around 5–10% at restaurants if service isn’t included in the bill. In cafés or taxis, rounding up is customary.

When to go

Portugal shines in the height of summer, when its golden beaches, seaside towns and open-air cafés come to life. But beyond the warmest months, the country reveals a quieter, more intimate charm. Inland hills turn lush and green, vineyards grow heavy with grapes, and historic cities feel more serene.
