Indonesia

Explore paradise islands, ancient temples, and lush rainforests of Indonesia

Introducing Indonesia

With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a cultural mosaic: marvel at Java’s Borobudur temples, snorkel Raja Ampat’s clear waters, and watch sunset from an active volcano in Lombok. Local traditions—from Borneo’s floating markets to Bali’s Kecak dances—make each stop unforgettable.

Your Travel Notes

Currency

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Notes range from 1,000 to 100,000 IDR; it’s best to withdraw cash at ATMs in major cities to avoid high fees.

Cuisine

Indonesian cuisine is richly spiced: try nasi goreng, beef rendang, chicken satay with peanut sauce, and coconut-based desserts like klepon.

Transport

To get around major cities, the GoJek and Grab apps offer taxis, motorbike rides, and private cars at affordable rates; between nearby islands, fast ferries and domestic flights regularly connect Bali, Lombok, Java, and Sumatra.

Tipping etiquette

Tipping isn’t mandatory but appreciated: leave around 5–10% in restaurants if service isn’t included, and 10,000–20,000 IDR for porters and local guides.

When to go

The dry season (April–October) is ideal for visiting Bali, Java, and Sumatra with clear skies; the rainy season (November–March) may bring downpours but also lower rates and lusher landscapes.
