Your Travel Notes

Currency

Morocco uses the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Notes range from 20 to 500 MAD and coins from 1 to 10 MAD. It’s best to withdraw cash at airports or major cities, as souks and remote villages may be cash-only.

Cuisine

Expect bold, aromatic flavors: lamb or chicken tagines, vegetable couscous, and sweet-and-savory pastilla. Don’t miss the mint tea, served hot and very sweet.

Transport

For main routes, use ONCF trains (comfortable and punctual) between Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Fez. In the desert, consider hiring a 4×4 with driver or joining organized tours. In cities, shared “grand taxis” are an economical option.

Tipping etiquette

Tipping isn’t mandatory but appreciated: leave around 5–10% in restaurants if service isn’t included, 5–10 MAD for waitstaff or porters, and round up for taxi rides.

When to go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) offer mild temperatures and sunny days. Summers can be very hot, especially in the desert, while winters are cool and occasionally rainy along the coast.
